Metabolic rate

In the context of thermal comfort and building energy simulation, the metabolic rate is defined as the rate of heat produced by a person divided by this person's body area. The metabolic rate may be expressed in W/m² (international units) or in MET, whereby 1 MET = 58.15 W/m² corresponds to the typical resting metabolic rate of a quietly sitting person. Note that other disciplines also use different definitions of the metabolic rate, as the ratio of heat rate to body mass or of oxygen use to body mass, which give similar - but not equivalent - measures of a person's physical activity.

Unit: W/m²
